Search Changed This Year,
and Most Business Owners Missed It

The other day I asked Google a question and got my answer straight away, right at the top of the page. I never clicked a single website. Not one. And it stopped me, because that small moment is a massive shift, and most business owners have not noticed it happening.

Here is the short version. Google no longer just hands you a list of links. It reads the web for you, writes you an answer using AI, and puts that answer above everything else. Most people read it and move on. They never reach anyone's website.

The numbers nobody told you

That AI answer is not a small experiment. By Google's own count, it now reaches 2.5 billion people a month, and its fuller, chat-style version passed 1 billion a month, getting there in about a year.

Here is the part that matters for you: people are not clicking through like they used to. In the US, according to 2026 research from a firm called SparkToro, roughly 68% of Google searches now end without the person clicking a single website. Two years ago it was closer to 60%. And a study from the Pew Research Center found that when the AI answer appears, people click a normal result only 8% of the time. Without it, they click 15% of the time. That is roughly half your visitors gone, before they ever reach your door.

I know that is uncomfortable to read. But you cannot fix a problem you refuse to look at.

The new game

The old game was simple: rank near the top of Google so people click you. That is fading. The new game is this: become the business the AI actually names inside its answer. If someone asks Google "who is the best [what you do] in Cape Town" and the AI names your competitor and not you, you have lost that customer before they saw a website. Being mentioned in the answer is the new front page.

Do not just trust the AI. Ever.

This is the part I feel strongly about, so hear me.

The AI answer sounds confident. It sounds like it knows. But confident and correct are not the same thing, and I have watched these tools state things that are simply wrong, in a calm, believable voice. One source telling you something is true is NOT enough. It never was, and it is even less enough now that the source is a machine trying hard to sound sure of itself. Check things. Look for the real source underneath. And as a business owner, do not build your whole plan on one channel you do not control. Google changes how its AI works overnight, and it has, several times this year.

If you run Google Ads, read this twice

Google has quietly handed more of your ad account to its own AI. It now decides who sees your ads, writes the wording, and picks the images. From September 2026, Google began automatically moving some Search campaigns over to this AI-run system, whether you asked for it or not.

And here is the sting: you are now legally responsible for what that AI creates. Google rewrote its Terms of Service this year, effective 1 July 2026, and it makes crystal clear that YOU are the one who has to check and approve everything the AI produces. The new terms applied to every account automatically. So if the AI writes something misleading or off-brand and it runs, that is on you.

So log in and look at what changed. Automation can get you better results, or it can quietly burn your Rand budget on rubbish searches while you are not watching. Put a real human in charge of approving the AI's work before it goes live. Set-and-forget is not safe anymore, because the risk sits with you now.

I wrote a full piece on how Google Ads works now that AI runs it, if you want the whole picture.

And here in South Africa?

This is not a far-off American thing. Google rolled out its AI answers in 13 African languages this year, including Afrikaans and isiZulu, and its Gemini AI arrived in Chrome for South Africans in June. Your customers are already using this today. One silver lining: we usually get these features a little after the US, so you get to watch what works overseas first, then move before your competitors notice. And remember, POPIA still requires proper consent before you track anyone, no matter what the browsers overseas are doing.

What to actually do

  1. Log into Google Ads and check what got switched on automatically. Set your own limits.
  2. Put a human in charge of approving AI-written ads before they run. You are on the hook now.
  3. Start being mentioned by the AI, not just ranked: clear, expert content that answers the real questions your customers actually ask.
  4. Stop relying on Google clicks alone. Build your name where your audience already spends time, and focus on the searches that still get clicks: people looking for you by name, local "near me" searches, and people ready to buy.

If this feels like a lot, that is because it is

I am not going to pretend any of this is simple. Keeping up with what Google changes every few months, rewriting your content so the AI mentions you, watching your ad account so it does not quietly waste your budget... that is a real job, on top of the real job you already have running your business.

So if you read that list and felt your stomach drop, that is normal. And it is exactly what we do. At Salt & Light Creations, we handle this side of things for business owners who would rather be running their business than second-guessing Google. We get your ads set up properly and actually watched, sort out your content so you show up in the AI answers, and make sure your tracking and POPIA consent are in order. No jargon, no guesswork.

One last thing

The tools change, faster than any of us would like. But the thing underneath does not: tell the truth, do right by your customers, and never hand your judgement to a machine just because it sounds confident. Check your sources. Do not assume the loudest, most certain voice in the room is the right one. That was good advice long before AI. It is just a lot more urgent now.
